These quick and easy crochet baby blankets are perfect for making for a baby boy or girl!

A crochet baby blanket is often a "go-to" gift for many crafters, and for those times when you need a last-minute gift, only a quick crochet pattern will do 🙂

Baby blankets are perfect for a baby shower gift, as well for an heirloom quality keepsake that will be in your family for years to come.

So, whether you are on the lookout for an easy blanket that you can crochet in 3 or 4 hours, or even if you have a little more time, this list is sure to have something for you.

Can you crochet a blanket in one day?

If you are new to crochet, you may be wondering how long it might take to crochet a baby blanket.

Well, as with many things in life, the answer here is "it depends."

The main factors that will determine how long it will take to make your blanket are:

  • Stitch pattern: A simple, repetitive stitch pattern will work up faster than a more complex one. With an easy stitch pattern, you simply won't have to concentrate as hard, making a pattern like this perfect for couch crocheting in the evenings.
  • Yarn weight: A blanket made with a thicker yarn (such as a #5/Bulky or #6/Super Bulky) will work up much faster than one made with a lighter DK or Worsted weight yarn. So, if you need a last-minute blanket, definitely choose a pattern that uses a thicker yarn!
  • Blanket size: There are many different sizes of baby blankets, from "lovey" to full-size cot blankets (see the chart below for the most common baby blanket measurements). Choose a smaller size if you need something that can be finished quickly!

What is the quickest crochet stitch for a blanket?

Usually, if you want something that works up quickly, you are going to need a simple, repetitive stitch pattern. Anything based on the double crochet (dc) stitch should work up pretty quickly, or any open stitch pattern (with small gaps created by crochet chains) will also not take long!

Some of the stitch patterns featured in the list below include:

  • Simple rows of dc or hdc
  • "V" stitch (which involves working (dc, ch 1, dc) into the same stitch to create a "v" shape).
  • Ripple stitch pattern – this creates a very attractive ripple or chevron pattern, which looks great on baby blankets!

And remember, even with the simplest stitch pattern, you can add a unique spin with stripes or a gradient yarn.

Most of the crochet baby blanket patterns below are suitable for beginners, as they are based on basic crochet stitches. All of the patterns have detailed written instructions, and many also  include photos and/or videos, should you need a little extra info!

And if you are a more experienced crocheter, then you will be able to whip up any of these blankets in no time :-).

What size should a crochet baby blanket be?

Baby blankets come in a variety of sizes – from "lovey" or snuggle blankets, to stroller blankets to crib blankets – there are a lot of options!

The table below has a list of the most common baby blanket sizes, but bear in mind that measurements may vary from pattern to pattern. Many blanket patterns will come with instructions for making adjustments to create a blanket of different sizes. For example:

  • To make a blanket wider/narrower, you will need to adjust your starting chain.
  • To make a blanket longer/shorter, you will need to adjust the number of rows you work.
 Blanket Size Inches Centimetres
Lovey 12" x 12" 30cm x 30cm
Security 16" x 16" 42cm x 42cm
Preemie 20" x 20" 50cm x 50cm
Small Cradle 14" x 30" 36cm x 76cm
Large Cradle 20" x 32" 50cm x 80cm
Receiving 40" x 40" 100cm x 100cm
Crib 40" x 60" 100cm x 152cm
